Fox has recently announced the new addition to its X-Men universe, The New Mutants. The movie is based off the Marvel comics of the same name revolving around Professor X’s youngest class of superhumans introduced in 1982.
The confirmed cast of this movie so far include: Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) as Magik; Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane; Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot; and Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar.
A few rumored, but not yet confirmed, castings include: James McAvoy returning as Professor X; Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball; Rosario Dawson (Daredevil) as Cecilia Reyes; and Alexander Shipp (X-Men Apocalypse) to reprise her role as Storm.
The casting so far seems to hint that this movie will stay closely related to The New Mutants comic with Magik and Wolfsbane being central characters. Josh Boone, the director, released a statement stating that this movie is going to take on a more horror theme, leaving behind the costuming and supervillains of the previous X-Men movies.
I have to admit being a bit weary at Fox being behind this new X-Men film. Although Logan and Deadpool were both extremely enjoyable, the rest of the X-Men movies have been a bit of a flop for me. Time and time again I was so disappointed seeing the characters I grew up with being reduced to whiny brats (what Fox did to Rogue is completely and utterly unforgiveable, Angel too). All I can hope is that Fox has found it’s “groove” with it’s recent successes (not including Apocalypse, whatsoever).
