I have always gravitated towards darker, more gritty content and graphic novels have always held a special place in my heart for that reason. Although I have not read the graphic novel Happy!, which the show is based on, I’ve heard many good things about it. I knew that I wanted to watch and it was almost a pleasant surprise going into a show blind, as I usually like to read the content before watching it.
The premiere of Happy! opens to an ex-cop turned drunken hit-man named Nick (Christopher Meloni). After a hit goes wrong and Nick gets shot, a magical flying blue horse appears named Happy. Happy is an imaginary friend there to take Nick to save kids from a drug addicted, crazy, kidnapping Santa. However, we see that it is going to be a bumpy ride with both the police and the mob gunning for Nick.
Happy! is not lacking in gore or brutality, and for me, that was a good thing. There was everything from prostitutes to gun fights to torture in this first installment of the new series on SyFy. The framing of this episode was incredible. It really looked like the panels of a graphic novel. Christopher Meloni was great. He really embodied the dark humor and madness of this character. Overall, I was impressed with this premiere and will definitely tune in next week.
